The culture and lifestyle of St. Thomas
We’ve been doing this for over 40 years. Selling real estate on St. Thomas, homes, land, the full spectrum, but more than that, living here, building here, riding out storms here. So when someone asks us what it’s really like, we don’t reach for the brochure. We tell them what we know.
Start with Carnival. It is the favorite local “jump up,” a spectacular expression of costumes, parades, music, and food, the very essence of island flavors and flair. A must see. A must do, but it takes stamina!
Then there’s the water. If you live on St. Thomas, you’d better like boating. The range is something else entirely, tiny Optis with 3 to 5-year-olds at the helm at the St. Thomas International Opti Regatta, all the way up to the largest cruise ships in the world anchored at Charlotte Amalie Harbor and Crown Bay. The ocean isn’t a backdrop here. It’s the whole backdrop.
What surprises people most, though, isn’t the beauty. It’s the community. St. Thomas is diverse, eclectic, and genuinely tough. When a hurricane comes through, and they do, neighbors show up for each other. People volunteer at the Humane Society, organize fundraisers, pick up trash on weekends without being asked. Nobody here is afraid to get their hands dirty. What we’ve seen, over and over, is that on St. Thomas, friends become family.
Now for the part we always mention, because we’d rather you hear it from us. You will not find everything you need at one grocery store. It’s just not going to happen. There are no super malls, no large department stores. Amazon will become your closest friend. These are not dealbreakers, they’re just the reality of island life, and once you adjust your expectations, you adjust. Most people find they mind it a lot less than they thought they would.
That’s the honest version. The beauty is real, the community is real, and so are the trade-offs. We’ve never found a better place to build a life. We just want you to walk in with your eyes open.
